Nigerian-American Soprano Victoria Lawal looks forward to appearing as an Prima Voce Emerging Artist in a recital alongside Pianist Mark Robson. This Fall, The Glimmerglass Festival presents The Knock, a World Premiere by Aleksandra Vrebalov and Deborah Brevoort, as a part of Common Ground. This three-year initiative will unveil six new pieces that tell stories of life in America. The opera tells a moving story centered on a group of military wives awaiting news of their deployed husbands. Lawal stars in this timely film, led by Director Allison Moritz and Director of Photography Ryan McKinny.
Victoria looks forward to debuting the role of Marzelline in Heartbeat Opera's critically acclaimed production of Fidelio with performances in New York, California, and Arizona. Further projects are yet to be announced. Victoria's 2020-2021 Season found fruitful collaborations in both Art and Advocacy. Lawal joined the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity for their Opera in the 21st Century Residency, co-directed by Karen Slack and Ian Cusson.
Lawal then joined the renowned Glimmerglass Festival as a Young Artist, debuting the role of Erste Dame in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and originating the role of Isabelle in The Passion of Mary Cardwell Dawson, a play by Sandra Seaton featuring music by Carlos Simon and excerpts from Bizet's Carmen.
Highlights from the 2019-2020 season include a debut with the Angeles Chorale performing Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem. Further engagements included a role debut as Helena in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and originating the role of Opal in the World Premiere of The Body Female, commissioned by LA Opera. Recent engagements affected by the Covid-19 pandemic included Beethoven's Mass in C, Mozart's Requiem, and originating the principal role of Sabine in Adoration by Mary Kouyoumdijan and Royce Vavrek with Beth Morrison Projects. Additionally, Lawal serves as Secretary of the Board of the Perfect Day Music Foundation and as an Associate of the Racial Equity Board for the Aspen Music Festival and School.
